You may install Epi Info 2000 from a
CD-ROM or from files downloaded from the Internet.
Uninstalling Previous
Versions of Epi Info 2000 If you have a
previous version of Epi Info 2000 installed, you should uninstall it
before installing a new version. To uninstall, go to the START Menu
on your Windows desktop, click on SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL, ADD/REMOVE
PROGRAMS, and select Epi Info 2000. A dialog box will appear for
selecting the uninstall method. Choose AUTOMATIC and click the NEXT button
and then the FINISH button to complete the uninstall. You can also
uninstall the previous version by running the UNWISE.EXE program found in
the EPI2000 directory.
Desktop
Applications Make certain all desktop
applications are closed before installing Epi Info 2000. It is usually not
necessary to shut down background programs such as virus
checkers.
Installing from a
CD-ROM If you are using the CD-ROM, place the
CD-ROM into the appropriate drive on your computer. Go to the START
menu on your Windows desktop, click on RUN, and enter the location of your
SETUP.EXE file (i.e., F:\SETUP.EXE). Proceed to
installation.
Preparing Downloaded
SETUP files If you have downloaded the setup
files, they should be in a temporary directory (i.e.,
C:\TEMP\SETUP.EXE). If you chose to download only the single file
called ALL_IN_1.ZIP, unzip it using PKUNZIP.EXE or WINZIP.EXE.
Proceed to installation.
Installing Epi Info
2000 Whether you are running Setup from a
CD-ROM or from downloaded files on your hard disk, a “Welcome” dialog box
will appear. Click NEXT to continue with setup. The “Choose
Destination Location” dialog box will appear. The default is
C:\Epi2000. Here is your chance to install in a directory other than
C:\EPI2000. To do so, click on the BROWSE button and select the
drive and directory of your choice. Press the NEXT button; the
“Select Components” dialog box will appear. By default, all
components are marked for installation. To proceed with a complete
installation, press the NEXT button. If you wish to install some but not
all components, deselect some by clicking until only those you wish to
install are checked. Press the NEXT button to continue to the “Start
Installation” dialog box. After the files are installed, the “Add to
Desktop” dialog box will ask if you want to install a desktop icon.
Select YES to create an Epi Info 2000 desktop icon. Additional
information dialogs may appear; click OK when you have read
them.
After the first batch of files is copied to
your hard disk (by a Microsoft program that installs MDAC -- the database
components of Visual Basic), you may be asked to reboot the
computer. In Windows 95, there may be a second reboot after
installing DCOM. Be sure to allow this to happen. Do not
install or run other programs before completing the
installation.
Components of Epi Info
2000 Epi Info 2000 has nine components - Make
View, Enter, Analysis, Statcalc, Nutstat, Epi Map, the Manual, and
Tutorials. They can be installed individually or collectively.
The full installation includes all nine components of the
software.
Full
Installation The default installation will
install all components of the software. When the “Select Components”
dialog box appears during the installation process, make certain all
components are selected so that a complete installation is
performed.
Custom Installation
(Selecting Components to Install) If you
would like to customize the installation by selecting partial components
of the software, you may do so when the “Select Components” dialog box
appears. Select the options you would like to have installed by
using your mouse to select or deselect the desired programs. The
dialog box will specify the disk space required and disk space remaining
on your computer. The disk space information will reflect the
choices you have made.
Drive and
Path Epi Info 2000 will be installed on your
C drive unless you choose otherwise. A directory (C:\EPI2000) will
be created when the software is installed. If you wish to select
another drive or path, you may do so when the “Destination Folder” dialog
box appears during the installation process. Use the BROWSE button
to choose another location.
Creating a shortcut to
Epi Info 2000 When the “Add to Desktop”
dialog box appears, select YES to create a shortcut to Epi Info 2000 on
the Windows desktop. The icon makes it easy to run Epi Info
2000.
Running Epi Info
2000 After installation, you may open Epi
Info 2000 either by using the desktop icon or by accessing the software
from the START menu on the Windows desktop under PROGRAMS. Epi Info
2000 can also be opened by running the EPI2000.EXE file in the EPI2000
directory.
Problems with
Installation If one or more of the programs
is not operating, we suggest uninstalling the software using the
UNWISE.EXE file in your EPI2000 directory and then reinstalling after
closing all desktop applications. To remove additional
uncertainties, virus checking and other background processes should be
turned off. Reinstall Epi Info 2000, being careful to permit
rebooting when it is suggested by the setup program.
If additional problem solving is necessary,
the file called INSTALL.LOG, which is written in the installed directory,
contains a list of the modules installed and may provide clues to diagnose
a problem. You can examine INSTALL.LOG yourself in the word
processor or send a copy to a technical support person. Do not edit
or erase INSTALL.LOG after installing Epi Info 2000, however, because it
is used by the uninstall program to remove files from the computer.
Getting Acquainted with
Epi Info 2000 To become acquainted with the
Epi Info 2000 programs, we recommend using the GUIDED TOUR and other parts
of the on-line MANUAL. To access the GUIDED TOUR, go to the Epi Info
2000 Menu and click on the GUIDED TOUR button. The GUIDED TOUR
provides specific instructions for the most efficient way to utilize Epi
Info 2000 programs. If you are not reading this from a paper copy of
the manual, we recommend that you print the GUIDED TOUR document and use
it as you proceed through the programs. If you have a printed copy
of the MANUAL, the GUIDED TOUR is one of the chapters.
The MANUAL is a menu item in Epi Info
2000. It provides an overview of the features and programs available
in Epi Info 2000. The on-line MANUAL is a valuable resource for
obtaining information about particular commands or programs in Epi Info
2000.
